Friends of the Sunnyvale Library

The Friends of the Sunnyvale Public Library was formed on June 9th, 1965, by a small group of dedicated community volunteers here in Northern California. Their goal was to be of service to the Sunnyvale Library and to raise money by holding book sales. Many decades later, the Friends is still a small group of dedicated volunteers, with the same goals, who still hold book sales to raise money for the library. The scale of operations, however, has increased substantially!

The first book sale in 1966 raised a few hundred dollars. Now, there are 5 or 6 Friends sales every year that each raise thousands of dollars. In addition, there is a sale area inside the library where books can be purchased whenever the library is open.

Our main source of books is donations, and our main source of donated books is you! We depend upon your generosity in order to hold our sales that benefit the library. Book donations can be put in the depository just inside the library or given to library staff at the checkout desk (you can get a tax receipt here). Arrangements for transferring large collections, estate donations, endowments, or bequests can be made by calling our Google Voice number (408) 982-6657 or by calling the library at (408) 730-7303.

The library uses money raised by the Friends to purchase special materials and equipment, to pay for programs for children and adults, and to assist the Sunnyvale School District in financing the RIF (Reading Is Fundamental) program.
